Young lawmakers took the floor of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly on Friday as students from across the province gathered for a “Youth Parliament on Climate Justice,” a mock legislative session aimed at building awareness of democracy, constitutional processes, and climate action.
Organized jointly by the KP Assembly, UNICEF KP, the provincial Planning and Development Department, and the Institute of Management Sciences (IMSciences) Peshawar, the event at Jirga Hall brought together university students to simulate real parliamentary proceedings and debate policy solutions to the climate crisis.
Speaker KP Assembly Babar Saleem Swati attended as chief guest. Also present were MPA Ashbar Jadoon, Secretary KP Assembly Syed Wiqar Shah, UNICEF KP Chief of Field Office Radoslaw “Radek” Rzehak, and IMSciences Joint Director Professor Dr. Atta ur Rehman.
Participants moved through the full cycle of legislative business — registration, opening proceedings, general debate, call attention notices, questions, resolutions, amendments, and voting.
In speeches and proposals, the students focused on climate change, environmental protection, and sustainable development, presenting recommendations on climate justice that were discussed and voted on in accordance with parliamentary rules.
Organizers said the exercise was designed to give youth practical exposure to democratic institutions and to encourage evidence-based policy thinking on environmental issues.
Speaking at the concluding ceremony, Speaker Babar Saleem Swati distributed certificates to participants and pledged that the KP Assembly would continue holding similar programs to promote democratic values, constitutional literacy, leadership, and climate responsibility.
“Young people are the valuable asset of the nation,” he said. “Providing them opportunities to understand the parliamentary system and legislative process, and to play an effective role in national and provincial affairs, is the need of the hour.”
UNICEF and IMSciences officials also lauded the participants for their engagement, noting that youth participation is critical to shaping climate policies that are just and inclusive.
