Advisor to the Chief Minister on health Ihtesham Ali on Monday said that the provincial government will launch a new project in the health sector aimed at providing free outpatient department (OPD) medicines to the poor and needy.
He said the project initially will begin at the Mardan Medical Complex (MMC) and will be extended to other regions of the province in the future.
He made this announcement during his visit to Bacha Khan Medical College, where he was briefed on the medical and educational affairs of the institution, said a handout.
The briefing session was attended by several key figures, including Provincial Food Minister Zahir Shah, members of the Provincial Assembly Iftikhar Mashwani and Abdul Salam Afridi, and senior members of the medical institution.
The Health Advisor elaborated that specific rules and regulations were being developed to ensure that the most deserving individuals receive free medicines, which will be prescribed by doctors for various conditions.
He emphasized that this pilot project will be expanded across the province after assessing its initial success.
Ali reaffirmed that both the health and education sectors were high priorities for the provincial government, with significant efforts underway to improve these services.
He highlighted his commitment to resolving healthcare issues in Mardan, his native area, with an immediate focus on addressing hospital challenges.
Furthermore, the Health Advisor assured that adequate funding would be provided to Benazir Bhutto Children’s Hospital to expedite the completion of pending developmental work.
The Health Advisor also promised strict action against any complaints related to medical institutions, assuring disciplinary measures for those responsible for shortcomings.
Earlier, Professor Dr Amjad Ali presented a detailed update on the medical and educational projects at Bacha Khan Medical College.
He shared that new departments for endocrinology, neurology, dermatology, and plastic surgery have been established at MMC in the past six months. Additionally, the construction of a 130-bed children’s ward at Benazir Bhutto Children’s Hospital was nearly complete, and the pediatric department will soon be moved there.
