PESHAWAR: Engr. Muhammad Salman, Department of Civil Engineering, University of Engineering and Technology, Peshawar successfully defended his Ph.D thesis here today under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Muhammad Javed. The topic of his Ph.D thesis was “Seismic Risk Assessment of Code Compliant and Non-Compliant Confined Brick Masonry Buildings in Northern Pakistan”. His research addresses the seismic vulnerability of masonry residential buildings in Pakistan, particularly in light of frequent earthquakes and inadequate construction practices. Despite recommendations in building codes, confined masonry is rarely implemented due to cost, lack of enforcement, and awareness. The context of this issue, is reflected in widespread damage observed in unreinforced masonry structures during recent earthquakes. News Desk
