Shafi Jan announces Selab Mehsud chair at Gomal University

Special Assistant to the Chief Minister on Information and Public Relations Shafi Jan has paid tribute to the renowned journalist late Selab Mehsud, highlighting his courageous and impactful work in the tribal region during challenging times.
Speaking at a ceremony organized by the Mehsud Press Club at the Museum Hall of the University of Peshawar (UoP), Shafi Jan described Selab Mehsud’s journalistic contributions as a “beacon of courage and integrity.”
He noted that Selab Mehsud continued his reporting during the enforcement of oppressive laws such as the FCR and in periods of severe terrorism, making his work exemplary for the journalistic community.
“His tireless efforts for human rights and against the FCR laws will always be remembered,” Shafi Jan added.
In recognition of his services, Shafi Jan announced the establishment of the Selab Mehsud Chair at Gomal University, Dera Ismail Khan, and a public library in his native area, Ladha Mehsud, to honor his legacy.
The ceremony was attended by members of the Provincial Assembly, Asif Mehsud and Tariq Saeed, Vice Chancellor of Gomal University, national leaders, and representatives from the political and journalistic community. Journalists Shams Momand, Fakhar Kakakhel, Shamim Shahid, Yasin Qureshi, and others also paid tribute to Selab Mehsud, recalling his literary, social, and journalistic contributions.
Addressing the gathering, Shafi Jan emphasized that Selab Mehsud used his pen to fight oppression and played a key role in societal reform.
“A nation that forgets its heroes cannot progress. Living nations value and honor their heroes,” he said.
He further highlighted the efforts of the young Chief Minister, Muhammad Sohail Afridi, in prioritizing public welfare. Shafi Jan assured that the provincial government was working to address the challenges faced by press clubs and will release funds to improve working conditions and opportunities for journalists.
A documentary on Selab Mehsud’s life was also screened during the event. Earlier, Special Assistant Shafi Jan was felicitated with a traditional turban in recognition of his presence at the ceremony.
