The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has set a target to install high-efficiency irrigation systems on 10,000 acres across the province in the next five months, as part of efforts to conserve water and boost agricultural productivity amid climate change.
Advisor to the Chief Minister on Agriculture Mian Muhammad Umer announced the target while addressing the closing ceremony of a three-day training workshop on High-Efficiency Irrigation Systems (HEIS) here on Friday.
According to a statement the workshop was organised by the On-Farm Water Management (OFWM) wing of KP under the Irrigated Agriculture Improvement Project. It aimed to enhance the technical capacity of field officers for effective implementation of modern irrigation technologies. Mian Muhammad Umer attended the ceremony as chief guest.
The statement stated that the Director General OFWM Hayat Khan, Project Director of the Irrigated Agriculture Improvement Project Muhammad Asif, district officers of OFWM and other officials were also present.
Speaking on the occasion, the advisor said modern irrigation systems had become essential due to increasing water scarcity and the need to raise farm output.
“The KP government is paying special attention to modern agricultural reforms, efficient use of water resources and the promotion of high-efficiency irrigation systems,” he said.
He added that in line with the vision of PTI founding chairman Imran Khan, the provincial government was taking practical measures to provide farmers with modern technologies and ensure sustainable agricultural development.
“These initiatives will not only help conserve water but will also significantly increase agricultural production,” he noted.
Mr Umer urged the participants to apply the knowledge gained during the training in the field and guide farmers effectively to achieve the assigned targets in time.
During the workshop, participants received detailed instruction on planning, design, survey, estimation and installation of drip and sprinkler irrigation systems. Sessions also covered the use of different types of pipes, solar-powered irrigation systems and other aspects of modern irrigation technology.
Expert trainers conducted practical demonstrations to strengthen the technical skills of officers. The training also included interactive question and answer sessions.
Officials said the OFWM wing has been assigned the task of promoting HEIS across the province under the directions of the chief minister and the advisor on agriculture. Enhancing the capacity of field staff was termed critical to achieving the 10,000-acre installation goal.
At the end of the ceremony, Mian Muhammad Umer distributed certificates among participants who completed the training.
