The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has alerted district administrations and relevant departments after increased water flows were reported in several rivers and water channels in glacier-covered areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The authority said rapid melting of glaciers and snow, coupled with recent rainfall, had raised water levels in several waterways, creating the risk of medium to high-level floods in vulnerable valleys and low-lying areas.
The PDMA warned that the situation could increase the risk of riverbank erosion, landslides and localised flooding in sensitive areas.
It directed relevant institutions to ensure continuous monitoring of vulnerable locations and issue timely warnings to populations at risk.
Residents of low-lying areas have been advised to remain cautious and shift livestock and essential belongings to safer and elevated places.
The authority also urged people to avoid unnecessary travel and stay away from fast-flowing rivers, streams and hill torrents.
Tourists and travellers have been advised to avoid camping and trekking near rivers, glacial lakes and narrow mountainous valleys in vulnerable areas.
The PDMA directed authorities to ensure the availability of rescue personnel and necessary equipment to deal with any emergency situation.
The authority said its emergency operations centre was fully functional and citizens could report any emergency through its 24-hour toll-free helpline 1700.
