Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Information Minister Shafi Jan on Friday said the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) public rally held in Peshawar formally launched the party’s campaign for the release of its founder, Imran Khan, describing the event as a demonstration of public confidence in the former prime minister and Chief Minister Sohail Afridi.
In a statement, the minister said the large turnout and enthusiasm of participants showed that Imran Khan remained the most popular political leader in the country and represented the hopes of the people. He said the rally would prove to be a significant milestone in the movement seeking the PTI founder’s release.
Referring to Chief Minister Sohail Afridi’s address at the gathering, Mr Jan said the announcement of a long march towards Islamabad on Sept 27 reflected the aspirations of party workers. He maintained that the demands presented by the chief minister during the rally were in accordance with the Constitution and the law.
The minister said providing timely justice to Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi in all pending cases was their constitutional and legal right. He called for the immediate removal of all restrictions imposed on the former prime minister.
Mr Jan also demanded that Imran Khan’s family members, lawyers, personal physicians and party leaders be allowed unrestricted access to meet him.
He said the PTI would pursue all constitutional and legal avenues to ensure such meetings and the provision of basic facilities to the party founder.
The information minister said PTI workers and supporters, particularly the youth, were fully prepared for the planned Islamabad march. He added that Imran Khan had consistently prioritised young people, which was why they continued to support his political vision.
Mr Jan alleged that the federal government had employed “illegal tactics” against the PTI due to political fears of Imran Khan. He claimed that despite what he described as unconstitutional measures, the resolve of the former prime minister and PTI workers remained unchanged.
