Twenty additional beds have been added to the Paraplegic Centre Peshawar to expand its treatment and rehabilitation facilities, marking a significant milestone on the eve of Pakistan’s Independence Day.
Provincial Minister for Health Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Khaleeq ur Rehman inaugurated the newly added beds at a ceremony held at Ward No. 3. Chairman Board of Governors Dr Shehzad Bangash, Rehabilitation Director Dr Ameer Zeb, Centre staff, administration and patients attended the event.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Ameer Zeb highlighted the growing needs of the Centre and called for an increase in its budget to further improve patient facilities. He also urged the revival of the Centre’s follow-up programme and the resumption of its skills-building programme to help rehabilitated patients become more independent and productive members of society.
Mr Rehman assured the Centre’s administration of the provincial government’s full possible support and cooperation, saying the government was committed to strengthening healthcare and rehabilitation services and providing patients with quality and dignified care.
He said the Paraplegic Centre had become an important rehabilitation facility not only for patients from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa but also for people from across Pakistan, including Sindh, Punjab, Balochistan, Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
He appreciated the dedication of the Centre’s administration and staff and assured that the provincial government would continue supporting efforts to enhance its capacity and improve services.
The minister described the Centre as one of the country’s most comprehensive rehabilitation institutions, providing physical, psychological, social and vocational rehabilitation services to people with spinal cord injuries, paralysis, brain injuries and other disabilities.
The addition of the 20 beds is expected to enable the Centre to accommodate more patients and provide timely treatment and rehabilitation facilities. Mr Rehman said the initiative was particularly meaningful on Independence Day as it reflected the government’s commitment to improving public services and healthcare facilities.
At the conclusion of the ceremony, Dr Shehzad Bangash and the Centre’s administration presented a commemorative shield to the provincial health minister in recognition of his support. A cake-cutting ceremony was also held, with the minister, Centre officials, staff and patients praying for the security, progress and prosperity of Pakistan.
