Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Muhammad Sohail Afridi on Monday expressed serious concern over a government medical report on the health of PTI founder Imran Khan and demanded that his family, lawyers and personal doctors be allowed to meet him and oversee his treatment.
Addressing a press conference in Islamabad alongside senior party leaders, the chief minister said the report had caused widespread concern and that Imran Khan’s personal doctors, family, lawyers and PTI leadership would consult each other before deciding the party’s future course of action.
Afridi said Imran Khan’s personal physicians, Dr Asim and Dr Faisal, had found his blood pressure normal whenever they accompanied him and examined him. He said the report of elevated blood pressure in the government medical report was therefore a matter of concern.
He said neither Imran Khan’s family members, lawyers nor personal doctors had been allowed to meet him since December 2, raising questions about his actual health condition.
The chief minister said Imran Khan was a sportsperson who had regularly exercised and had not previously faced such health problems. He alleged that his deteriorating health was the result of conditions in jail and held the federal government and those responsible for his detention accountable.
Afridi criticised the judiciary for not taking notice of repeated concerns raised by the PTI regarding Imran Khan’s health. He said the judiciary was the “last hope” of the people and questioned what ordinary citizens could expect from the justice system if a former prime minister and leader of the country’s largest political party could not receive justice.
He reiterated the PTI’s demand that Imran Khan be allowed to meet his family and lawyers and that his personal doctors be permitted to examine him and supervise his treatment at a leading hospital in the presence of his family.
The chief minister said Imran Khan’s health was a genuine and serious matter and rejected any suggestion that the issue was being fabricated to secure relief or facilitate his departure from the country.
Afridi warned that the government, judiciary and those responsible for Imran Khan’s detention would be held accountable for the situation, saying the public would demand answers.
He said the party was not seeking any extraordinary relief from the courts but only justice, adding that the judiciary’s fundamental responsibility was to ensure fair treatment.
Referring to Tuesday’s scheduled meeting day for Imran Khan, the chief minister appealed to the courts to allow his lawyers and family members to meet him. He said only the family could properly inform the public about his actual health condition after assessing him directly.
Afridi once again urged the authorities to restore meetings between Imran Khan and his family and lawyers and allow his personal doctors access to him and supervise his treatment at a hospital of their choice in the presence of his family.
