Preparations are underway to create 50 new posts of grade- 18 and grade -19 in dysfunctional treasury offices in Punjab.
This move has started raising questions on the austerity policy of provincial government.
According to sources the district and tehsil offices of Punjab Treasury and Accounts were established in the decade of 1970. With the passage of time about all basic financial and administrative responsibilities of these offices have been shifted to banks and other institutions. Practical activities have come to end in all offices. The job of preservation of old official record is left with them.
Sources said this institutional structure should have been abolished or down sized following the abolition of basic responsibilities.
Despite it 50 new vacancies of Deputy Inspector of Treasury BPS-18 and Inspector of Treasury BPS-19 are being created.
As per sources these posts have been created in connivance with the objective of promoting some employees for further upgrading them while these posts are not real need of the respective offices.
It is told that an officer who is about to retire has played role in this proceeding.

Sources said on one hand Punjab government is pursuing policy of abolishing unnecessary posts and austerity and on the other hand creation of new posts of higher grade has raised grave questions on the justification and motive of this step and likely burden on national kitty.
