Abbottabad Region Hockey trials under Prime Minister Youth Talent Hunt ends


Two-day girls and boys Abbottabad Region hockey trials in connection with the Prime Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif Youth Talent Program Friday ended at historical Kunj Football ground here.
The selection committee headed by former Olympian Rahim Khan with other members including Zia Ur Rehman Banori, Director Physical Education Waqas Khan, Mariyyah Samin Jan (Women Coordinator) and Dr. Noorzada (male coordinator) have thoroughly monitored the performances of both girls and boys players appeared in the hockey trials.
In the boys trials a total of 197 players appeared and out of the total players 22 players were selected. On this occasion, Pakistan Muslim League (N) District Abbottabad President Malik Mahabat Awan was the chief guest along with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Youth Coordinator Engineer Arif Rawan, former Sports Director Tariq Mehmood, Regional Sports Officer Ahmed Zaman, and Provincial Hockey Association President Syed Zahir Shah. Secretary Hidayatullah, Director Distance Education System Dr. Noorzada, Selection Committee Members Olympian Rahim Khan, International Player Syed Ziaur Rahman Banuri, Director Sports and International Player Waqas Ahmed and other important personalities were present.
The boys selected players comprising Wajahat, Ahmad Muneer, Muhammad Umeer (goal-keepers).
Full backs: Azlan Ahmed, Hasan Ali, Mushtaq, Muhammad Umeer in half backs, Syed Muneeb Shah, Mutiur Rehman, Saifur Rehman Sethi, Muhammad Shoaib, Saifullah in forwards, Umeer Hasan, Asim, Muhammad Adil, Abdullah, Uzair Rafiq were selected while in the standby players including Zain Tariq, Shakir Ali, Usman Iqbal, Uzain Rehman, Umar Nisar and Fahad Parvez.
In the light of the special instructions of Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif, under the supervision of Advisor to Prime Minister Amir Muqam, Special Assistant Shaza Fatima, University of Peshawar hosted the boys trials of the Abbottabad Region while the Girls trials conducted by Deputy Director Sports Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Women University (SBBWU).
In the Girls trials 110 girls appeared in the trials on the first-day while 22 others participated in the trials and out of 132 girls players 25 would be short-listed later on, said Mariyyah Samin. “We are giving them more time so that a good team would be selected for the Abbottabad Region like we had in Peshawar and Mardan.
Addressing the players the chief guest Malik Mahabat Awan, who is also nephew of former hockey Olympian Fazal-ur-Rehman, said that steps are being taken to promote sports across the country in the light of Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif’s instructions.
An example of this is the Prime Minister’s Youth Talent Hunt program, which includes 12 different Games for boys and 10 different Games for girls. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Youth Coordinator Engineer Arif Rawan said that hockey trials are being held in 25 regions across the country, including five regions from each province.
Athletes from Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Islamabad regions will also be included in the trials. The best teams will be selected for the League of each Games including hockey, first at provincial levels and then at national level.
The National Hockey League will be organized between the winning teams of each province and out of the same 25 players would be short-listed for a month-long international tour in their respective Game, he informed.
Director General Sports University of Peshawar and Coordinator HEC Games for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Bahre Karam said that the best arrangements have been made for the trials and the players will be selected only on the basis of merit. The player who performs on the field will be selected, he added.
