The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)-led Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government on Friday announced that it would withdraw the controversial provisions of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Provincial Assembly (Powers, Privileges and Immunities) Act, 2026, and amend the law to bring it in line with the 1988 legislation, Information Minister Shafi Jan said.
In a video statement, the minister said the decision was taken during a meeting of the provincial cabinet chaired by Chief Minister Muhammad Sohail Afridi. Speaker of the Assembly Babar Saleem Swati participated in the meeting via video link.
Mr Jan said the decision was made on the chief minister’s directives and after consultation with the provincial assembly speaker Babir Saleem Swati.
He said all provisions considered objectionable would be withdrawn and the law would be amended in accordance with the Members of the Assembly Privileges Act, 1988.
The minister said a meeting of all parliamentary leaders would be convened on Monday to take them into confidence over the proposed amendments.
Mr Jan said the provincial government would not take any decision contrary to the wishes of the people and would address the concerns of the journalist community and other stakeholders regarding the legislation.
