Chief Minister Muhammad Sohail Afridi on Saturday lauded the province’s security and civic arrangements for Muharram and unveiled plans to build six permanent gateways at the entry points of Peshawar’s Walled City.
During his visit to the central procession route and Kohati Command Post on Youm-e-Ashur, he was told that the Provincial Command and Control Centre functioned continuously through Muharram to coordinate police, Rescue 1122, the army and intelligence agencies. Six more posts were set up across the city for better oversight.
The briefing stated that around 11,000 security officials were deployed in Peshawar. Till 8th Muharram, 115 processions and 308 majalis were held. On 10th Muharram, the city hosted the central procession along with 15 others and 10 majalis. Integrated monitoring via CCTV, drones and newly inducted anti-drone systems covered most gatherings, 90 per cent of which were inside the Walled City.
Municipal services, power and gas remained uninterrupted. A detailed traffic plan was implemented and Section 144 enforced.
“The professionalism and dedication shown by all departments ensured peaceful observance,” Mr Afridi said, announcing an honorarium for command post staff. He added that strengthening police with modern technology would remain a government priority.
On the significance of the day, he said Ashura’s message of truth and perseverance continues to guide the Muslim Ummah.
