Swat River Tragedy
DLP Report

A tragic incident occurred in Swat River, where several tourists drowned due to sudden flooding and a strong surge in water flow.
Commissioner Malakand Division, Abid Wazir, along with Deputy Commissioner Swat, Shahzad Mehboob, visited the affected areas to assess the situation and oversee the ongoing response efforts.
Expressing profound grief over the loss of lives, Commissioner Wazir ordered an immediate departmental inquiry into the incident.
He emphasized that any evidence of negligence by relevant institutions would lead to strict legal action against those responsible.
To safeguard public lives, the District Administration Swat had already enforced a ban on bathing, swimming, and boating in the Swat River under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
Despite repeated public advisories and warnings, some individuals ignored the restrictions. As a result, 48 FIRs were registered against violators for bathing in the river, leading to the arrest of 9 individuals. Additionally, 23 FIRs were registered for illegal boating, with 4 offenders jailed.
In light of the current situation, the Commissioner cancelled the leaves of Assistant Commissioners, Additional Assistant Commissioners, and heads of relevant departments, directing them to remain in their jurisdictions and closely supervise all relief operations.
He also instructed the police, Rescue 1122, TMAs, the Irrigation Department, WSSC, and other concerned institutions to stay on high alert and utilize all available resources for immediate rescue and relief activities.
The district administration has once again urged the public to take the prevailing flood threat seriously. Citizens are advised to stay away from rivers, streams, and other high-risk areas, and to strictly follow safety guidelines issued by authorities.
“Protection of public life and property is our top priority,” said Commissioner Wazir. “We are committed to taking every possible measure to prevent further loss and ensure the safety of our people.”
