Dangerous escalation

The conflict between Israel and Palestine has reached a new level of intensity after Israel responded to an attack by Hamas, the Palestinian militant group controlling the Gaza Strip, with relentless bombing campaigns, levelling entire districts since the October 7, with casualties on both sides.
The situation is complicated by the involvement of regional and international actors, and the potential for further escalation is a cause for concern. It’s essential for the international community to continue diplomatic efforts to bring both sides to the negotiating table and work towards a lasting solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, as further escalation could have severe humanitarian consequences and destabilize the region.
The underlying issues of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, such as the status of Jerusalem, settlement expansion, and the right of return for Palestinian refugees, remain unresolved. These ongoing grievances have the potential to reignite the conflict, which is feared to escalate into a wider war in the Middle East at any time.
Israel’s indiscriminate bombardment of Gaza since October 7 has killed more than 5,000 people and injured another 15,000. The massive civilian casualties in the narrow coastal enclave could not only trigger a dangerous conflict in the region, but also has the potential to escalate into a wider conflict, drawing in major world powers.
Pakistan has at a tense United Nations Security Council meeting once again reiterated its strong condemnation of Israeli air strikes and military action in Gaza, warning that further civilian casualties could spill over the war.
According to news item published on these pages, Pakistan’s Ambassador to the UN, Munir Akram, during the 15-member Security Council’s high-level debate on the ongoing conflict, has called for an immediate cessation of hostilities and unconditional ceasefire.
The entire Islamic World believes that continuation of the Israeli bombing campaign in Gaza will lead to further civilian casualties and could trigger a more dangerous conflict.
Opening the debate, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has observed that the Hamas’s attacks cannot justify the collective punishment of the Palestinian people. Those pointed words from the secretary-general drew a hostile reaction from Israel’s diplomats. Israeli ambassador to the UN Gilad Erdan called on him to “resign immediately” in a tweet, and at the stakeout outside the Security Council.
It is regrettable that the Security Council has been unable to issue a call for or to effect an immediate ceasefire. A heavy responsibility rests on those who contribute to the prolongation of this conflict. The failure of security council to adopt two previous draft resolutions addressing the escalation in the Middle East postulate the gravity of the situation and role of the UN in conflict resolutions among the member states.
The conflict between Israel and Palestine has indeed resulted in a significant loss of life and raised serious humanitarian issues. It’s essential for international bodies, like the United Nations Security Council, to address these concerns and seek a resolution to the conflict. The call for a ceasefire and the protection of civilian lives is crucial in such situations. The international community should work towards achieving justice and accountability for all parties involved to prevent further suffering.
