PESHAWAR: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Monday barred Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman and former Prime Minister Imran Khan from attending a scheduled public meeting in district Mardan on October 13.
The warning was issued by ECP’s district monitoring officer in view of the upcoming by-elections in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The electoral watchdog has stated in its order that legal action under the relevant provisions of law will be taken if by-elections codes were breached by the PTI chairman. It may be noted here that Imran Khan is scheduled to visit Mardan on Oct, 13 to address a public meeting there as part of the mass contact campaign for the by-elections in the province. The commission stated in its order that the person holding public office could not visit districts, where the by-elections were to be held in accordance with the electoral code of conduct.
It is pertinent to mention here that ECP has announced October 16 as a date for the by-elections for four National Assembly general seats from KP and former Prime Minister Imran Khan contesting polls in all those constituencies.
The constituencies where the by-polls for the NA seats will be held include Charsadda, Mardan, Peshawar and Kurram.
