The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has sent recommendations to the government to amend Section 219 of the Elections Act 2017, emphasizing the importance of holding timely local government elections.
In a press release, the ECP stated that local governments were a crucial pillar of democratic institutions, providing essential services and resolving issues at the grassroots level.
The proposed amendment aimed at ensuring that local government elections are held according to the laws in force at the time of the expiry or dissolution of the local governments.
The ECP expressed concern that successive governments have shown reluctance to hold timely local government elections, despite it being a joint responsibility of the federal, provincial governments, and the ECP.
The commission’s recommendations seek to prevent delays in the electoral process and ensure that local governments remain functional, serving the needs of the people.
