FM asks diplomats to promote economic diplomacy


Pakistan shifting focus from geo-politics to geo-economic under PM Imran Khan: FM
Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi has said Pakistan is shifting focus from geo-politics to geo economics under leadership of Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan.
“Only economic diplomacy can not serve as magic wand for treading on path to change. We will have to make full fledged efforts in this respect, he said this while presiding over a high level meeting held here in foreign ministry under him Monday with regard to economic diplomacy.
The meeting was attended by special foreign secretary Raza Bashir Tarar, Pakistan ambassadors from different countries and senior officers of foreign ministry.
Addressing the meeting FM said he was happy that more focus was being placed on economic diplomacy. The heads of the missions are taking personal interest therein.
“You have perception that economic development is linked to national security. Pakistan is focusing on geo economics from geo politics under the leadership of Imran Khan. I understand it that only economic diplomacy can not magic wand on treading path to change.
He told the participants that foreign ministry had held two ambassadors conferences on economic diplomacy.
He observed that Africa is very important region for us. Pakistan has opened 5 missions in Africa to enhance its economic diplomacy.
He indicated in the gradation of ease of doing business Pakistan graph has been improved by 39 points during the last two years. Our stock exchange has been declared the world best performing market. The gradation of our business confidence has improved upward by 59 points.
He stated that with the encouraging increase of 7 percent with African countries Pakistan overall trade has increased.
Under Roshan digital account (RDA) move more than 2.9 billion US dollars have been deposited from 175 countries in more than 299000 accounts. Investment about 2 billion US dollars has come in Naya Pakistan certificates. Time has come we should utilize all our energies to achieve our set targets.
He hinted that economic diplomacy is broader concept than merely imports and exports. All the steps are part of it which can be instrumental in improving national economy.
These endeavors include promotion of trade, investment and tourism, generation of job opportunities in foreign countries, increase in remittances and facilitating the transfer of technology.
He held Pakistan needs to take new steps to jack up its exports. We need to place focus on future industries.
We need to promote all the dimensions of tourism including religious tourism in proactive manner, he stressed. We need to continue our work aggressively on economic diplomacy, he added. On this occasion, Pakistan’s diplomatic missions apprised the Foreign Minister about their efforts for promoting economic diplomacy.
