PESHAWAR
Living up to his word, Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Mahmood Khan on Tuesday made the Khyber Teaching Hospital (KTH) oxygen incident report public. The report recommended dismissal of seven suspended employees from service with legal action against them as the law for committing criminal negligence.
The committee investigating the deaths at Khyber Teaching Hospital (KTH) said in its report that the oxygen capacity of the hospital was increased from 5,000 to 10,000, however, the capacity of the pipes was not boosted up in the line with the increase of tank capacity.
The report submitted to KP Chief Minister Mehmood Khan uncovers the negligence of the Human Resources (HR) manager as he had recruited untrained staff for the oxygen plant at the hospital which led to the deaths. The committee said the process of recruiting staff on a temporary basis to replace the suspended employees has begun.
The report has also recommended that the services of suspended hospital director Tahir Nadeem be returned to the health department and notices be issued to two former directors of the hospital. A fresh oxygen supply agreement to be made with the concern agency in order avoids such incidents in the future.
It may be recalled that on December 6, six people, including five coronavirus patients, died at the KTH in Peshawar due to interrupted and untimely supply of oxygen.
The Chief Minister of KP and the provincial minister for health had taken notice of the incident and directed the Board of Governors (BoGs) of the hospital to investigate, after which a preliminary investigation report was published in which various reasons for the incident were stated. Another committee was formed at KTH on December 14 to determine responsibility for the incident.
Chairman Prof Nadeem Khawar told the media that the hospital authority has been allowed by the Chief Minister to take more time to fully investigate the matter, we have formed a committee of three professors to fully investigate the issue and work on the report is underway.
