Irrigation minister visits flood-hit Buner, orders improvement in drainage system

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Minister for Irrigation Riaz Khan on Monday visited flood-affected areas of Battai in Buner district and inspected various waterways, directing authorities to take immediate steps to improve the drainage system, a handout said.
During the visit, the minister was accompanied by former general councillor Hazrat Khan.
Officials briefed him on the damages caused by recent floods, the condition of waterways and the challenges being faced in drainage and water disposal. Mr Khan examined different spots and instructed the relevant authorities to ensure prompt improvement in the drainage network to effectively deal with any future flood situations.
Speaking on the occasion, the minister said a formal tender for the cleaning of waterways would be issued on May 11, after which work would commence without delay. He emphasised that timely desilting and cleaning of waterways would not only reduce flood risks but also provide relief to the local population.
He directed officers to ensure transparency, quality and timely completion of the work, warning that negligence or delays would not be tolerated.
The minister said the provincial government was utilising all available resources to protect citizens from natural disasters and ensure provision of essential services.
He also instructed the authorities to maintain continuous monitoring of the area and adopt pre-emptive measures to effectively respond to any emergency situation.
On the occasion, former general councillor Hazrat Khan thanked the provincial minister for visiting the area, saying the steps would help address local issues and that cleaning of waterways would significantly reduce flood risks in Battai.
