A temporary ceasefire has been established between the United States and Iran. To completely end the war, negotiations are being held in Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan. At the time of writing these words, the talks have not yet begun but are expected to start soon. Delegations from both sides have already arrived in Islamabad.Pakistan has played a significant role in bringing both parties to the negotiating table, and its efforts are being appreciated globally. It is extremely difficult to predict whether these negotiations will succeed.Prior to the talks, Israel launched an attack on Lebanon, and Iran clearly stated that such attacks must stop. The Strait of Hormuz has been reopened, leading to a decrease in oil prices. The United States and Israel had jointly initiated the war against Iran on the grounds that Iran had enriched uranium to a level that could be used for military purposes. However, despite the war, the United States could not fully achieve its objectives. After the war began, former U.S. President Donald Trump threatened severe consequences for Iran, even stating that Iranian civilization could be destroyed.A deadline was also given, but shortly before it expired, efforts by Pakistan and several other countries led both sides to agree to negotiations. These talks are now being held on equal footing, indicating that Iran is also a strong party despite its economic weaknesses and relatively limited modern weaponry.
The core issue remains uranium enrichment. The key question is whether the United States can persuade Iran to abandon or limit its nuclear program.Iran has consistently maintained that its uranium enrichment is for peaceful purposes. Giving up its nuclear program would, in Iran’s view, weaken its national security. These negotiations are likely to be very difficult due to a deep lack of trust between the two sides. Both parties have already presented strict conditions, and it will be challenging for either side to accept the other’s demands. It is also worth noting that Israel may not favor a strong and stable Iran in the Middle East.If the negotiations fail, tensions in the region could escalate again. The Strait of Hormuz might be closed once more, potentially triggering another regional conflict. Due to mutual distrust, both sides remain cautious. U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance has warned Iran against deception, while Donald Trump has also indicated that war could resume if talks fail. However, it cannot be said with certainty that the negotiations will completely fail. The United States itself appears interested in ending the conflict. Global pressure on Washington is increasing and regional countries are also urging an end to the war due to its economic impact. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz had caused oil prices to rise, affecting the global economy and increasing inflation. Trade and commerce were also disrupted.
Therefore, there is a possibility that the war may come to a complete end. However, it is equally possible that the current ceasefire remains temporary. If Iran does not abandon its nuclear program, the risk of renewed conflict will persist. On the other hand, if the negotiations succeed, it would be a major breakthrough. The Strait of Hormuz would remain open, global sanctions on Iran could be eased or lifted, tensions in the Gulf region would decrease, and international trade would stabilize.
A comparison between Iran and the United States shows that Iran is significantly weaker. The U.S. dollar is a globally dominant currency, while Iran’s currency remains unstable and much weaker. The United States possesses advanced weaponry and has alliances such as NATO,making it stronger overall. If the United States fails to achieve its demands, there is a possibility that war could resume.
Such a conflict would not only destabilize the Middle East but could also spread globally. There is a risk that major world powers might become involved. Some could support Iran, potentially leading to serious challenges for the United States, while others may back the U.S., causing significant damage to Iran.
In any case, whether the negotiations succeed or fail, even a temporary pause in the war is valuable,as it saves human lives. This conflict must come to an end, and the international community must play its role in ensuring lasting peace.
