PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government was actively working to restore two significant archaeological sites in Dera Ismail Khan including Kafir Kot and Rehman Dheri. In a statement issued here on Sunday by Director General of Archaeology and Museums, Dr. Abdul Samad, restoration and conservation work was being conducted using modern scientific methods. He explained that under leadership of Chief Minister Ali Amin Khan Gandapur, preservation of province’s cultural heritage has become a key priority. This initiative was part of KP Integrated Tourism Development Project, which aims to protect historical significance of region’s sites. Dr. Samad described Kafir Kot as a “magnificent example of Gandhara civilization,” noting its origins as a Buddhist-era fortress. He also highlighted Rehman Dheri as “one of oldest urban settlements in world,” which has ties to Indus Valley civilization. The goal of these projects is twofold: not only to protect these sites for future generations but also to boost tourism and strengthen the local economy. The restoration efforts adhere to international standards and are supervised by experienced archaeologists, with ultimate aim of showcasing Pakistan’s rich historical heritage.
