Over the past 5 years, a total of 12,164 incidents of violence against children, women, and transgender persons were reported in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).
According to the data, there were more than 3,598 cases of violence against children, resulting in only 187 convictions. Additionally, there were 8,299 cases of violence against women, with only 168 resulting in convictions. Similarly, there were 234 reported cases of violence against transgender persons, but only one person was convicted.
The data reveals a troubling trend of low conviction rates, with police officials attributing this to weak investigations, inadequate provisions, and lack of resources. The high number of reported incidents of violence against vulnerable groups raises questions about the effectiveness of policing and other departments in the province.
The data clearly indicates a pressing need for improved protections and justice for victims of violence in the province.
Moreover, the province has also observed unprecedented spike in the incidents of violence against women.
UP to 1859 cases of violence against women were reported in 2023, 1930 in 2022, 1566 in 2021, and 1585 cases reported in 2020.
Similarly, 1359 cases were reported in 2019, according to the official documents.
The record show that last year, 61 cases of violence against transgender persons were reported in the province and 88 in 2022, 61 in 2021, 40 cases in 2020, and 17 cases in 2019.
