Governor Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Haji has said that the Local Government Act must be restored in its original form to transfer powers to local government representatives.
Unfortunately, the local government system has been paralyzed for the past two years across the province, which is hindering the resolution of people’s problems at the grassroots level in all districts, including the annexed districts.
He expressed these views while talking to a delegation of more than 50 Mayors and Chairman’s and elected representatives of local government of different parts of the province. The delegation was led by Mayor Mardan Himayatullah Mayar.
The participants of the delegation told the governor that there was a hearing in the Peshawar High Court regarding the transfer of funds and powers to the local government representatives, in which the advocate general appeared on behalf of the provincial government and told that the he will get information about the transfer of funds to the local government representatives from provincial government and will submitted it in the honorable court at the next hearing.
The delegation said that problems are occurring due to lack of funds and powers to local government representatives and problems are not being solved at the regional level, which is increasing public problems.
They said that the Local Government Act under which local government elections were held in the province must be restored in its original form so that the elected local government representatives can get all their legal powers.
The participants of the delegation wanted to meet the Chief Secretary and requested the Governor, on which the Governor contacted the Chief Secretary on the phone at the same time and the Chief Secretary provided a time for the meeting.
Talking to the delegation, the Governor said that the Governor, the caretaker Chief Minister, the Chief Secretary and the administrative heads of other related institutions are in favor of funds and powers to the local representatives, a clear example of which is holding several meetings with the local government and other relevant authorities and the election commission has also been informed about the release of funds.
The previous government had maliciously amended the Local Government Act, depriving the elected local government representatives of their rights and powers.
The elected local government representatives should be reassured that the current caretaker government is with them and we are trying to ensure that all the elected local government representatives of the province get funds and powers. Governor directed the delegation to continue to perform service as your duty and avoid protest and strike on non-provision of funds and powers.
On this occasion, the delegation thanked the provincial government, including the governor, caretaker chief minister, for their serious thinking and actions regarding the transfer of funds and powers of elected local representatives.
