Meeting streeses on religious awareness for climate change resilience in KP

A significant consultative meeting held here on Wednesday in Peshawar under the organization of the Sustainable Development Organization (SPO), aiming to address climate change challenges and promote public awareness.
Scholars, madrasah teachers, environmental experts, civil society representatives, and government officials participated in the meeting.
The primary goal was to develop a comprehensive action plan for climate change mitigation through places of worship and madrasas.
SPO Regional Manager Fazal Ghafoor Khan emphasized that places of worship and madrasas are critical avenues for spreading environmental consciousness, asserting, “They are the best sources of reform in our society, and from here, we can effectively disseminate messages of environmental stewardship and natural resource conservation.
Climate change is a collective issue, and unity among social and religious forces is vital.”
Mufti Mansoori spoke on the religious aspect, stating, “Religion instructs us to protect the natural system, and in today’s world, it is our collective responsibility to take action against the dangers of climate change.
Raising awareness is key.”
Sahibzada Haider Jan, representative of the Awqaf Department, highlighted the department’s readiness to involve mosques and madrasas in environmental initiatives.
“This is not just a religious responsibility but also an extension of our social duty,” he said.
Jamal Nasir from the Forestry Department emphasized the importance of a plantation drive.
He suggested, “We can significantly improve the natural environment by planting trees around places of worship and madrasas. Our department will provide all necessary support.”

The forum recommended that special environmental protection sessions should be organized in synagogues and madrasas, environmental topics should be incorporated into the madrasah curriculum, plantation campaign should be tied to places of worship and madrasas. A public awareness campaign should be initiated for water conservation and forest promotion,it added.
SPO and the KP Auqaf Department jointly announced the launch of climate protection programs through places of worship and madrasas in various districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The meeting marked a significant step forward in bringing together social, religious, and governmental institutions to tackle environmental challenges collaboratively.
