Al-Khidmat Foundation Women’s Wing has urged the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to utilize funds received from international organizations directly for the welfare of flood victims, warning that silence on the issue was raising serious questions.
This was stated by Al-Khidmat Women’s Wing Supervisor for Flood Relief and former MNA Ayesha Syed at a press conference in Peshawar Press Club, flanked by former MNA Inayat Begum, Flood Relief Assistant Amra Sajjad, Provincial Nazima Hasina Naz and District Nazima Samina Yaqoob.
She said the devastating August 15 cloudburst floods claimed around 500 lives, injured hundreds and destroyed nearly 800 houses while partially damaging over 3,000 more across nine districts. Livestock, standing crops, gardens, shops and markets in Swat, Buner, Shangla and Swabi were also washed away.
Ayesha Syed said Al-Khidmat volunteers launched rescue efforts on the first day, during which one volunteer, Muhammad Zahoor, lost his life while saving others in Buner.
Currently, 7,500 volunteers remain engaged in flood-hit areas. Relief efforts so far include distribution of 1,200 tents, 2,500 tarpaulins, 7,000 mosquito nets, 40,000 bottles of clean water, 700 cooking pots and cooked meals for 60,000 people.
Medical aid has been provided to more than 24,000 people through 20 mobile health units and 28 free camps, while 44 ambulances are offering free transport to patients.
She stressed that victims are suffering from psychological trauma and called on the government to immediately send teams of psychologists for counseling. Al-Khidmat, she added, will fully support orphaned children, widows and destitute women, provide education for affected children, and build houses for the homeless as was done after the 2022 floods.
Appealing to both federal and provincial governments, she said: “This is not the time for politics but for service. Rehabilitation requires the joint cooperation of the people and the government.”
