City Mayor Mardan Himayatullah Mayar has said that prevention of domestic violence is the collective responsibility of the society. Ignorance of rights is also one of the reasons for this, he further said adding special programs should be broadcast by the media on women’s rights and measures should be taken to ensure the implementation of laws in this regard.
He was addressing a dialogue on domestic violence organized by the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan at TMA Hall. Shahid Khan of HRCP, Vice Chairman of the Commission Akbar Khan and Ijaz Mohmand Advocate besides male and female members of City Council, lawyers and other civil society representatives participated in the dialogue.
Himayatullah Mayar said that Islam advises us to have good behavior and high morals. Ignorance of laws and less knowledge of their rights lead to domestic violence.
He further said that the media should play its role in this regard. He said Marriage is a contract between a man and a woman in which the role of both is clear and both should positively play their role.
The others speakers said that there is no scope for domestic violence in the law, if the perpetrators are punished according to the law, it can be stopped. They also appreciated the role of Human Rights Commission in the protection of human rights.
