Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has announced a peaceful protest on February 8, reaffirming its commitment despite alleged restrictions and violence against its workers.
Speaking at a press conference at the Peshawar Press Club (PPC) here on Wednesday, PTI Information Secretary Sheikh Waqas Akram condemned the alleged lathi charge on party workers and Imran Khan’s sisters, while highlighting the isolation of the former prime minister in Adiala Jail.
Addressing the media, Sheikh Waqas Akram said the federal and Punjab governments were violating international law by restricting Imran Khan’s access to lawyers and doctors, and by preventing his family and supporters from meeting him.
“It is regrettable that even doctors are not allowed to see Imran Khan. Women and children visiting Adiala Jail to meet him are being harassed and detained,” he said.
He also criticized attempts to link KP to terrorism, stressing that the province has borne the brunt of terrorism and made the greatest sacrifices in combating it.
“Some federal ministers issue statements against KP and Chief Minister Sohail Afridi every morning merely to protect their positions,” he added.
PTI leader Shaukat Ali Yousafzai highlighted federal neglect of KP, saying the province was being denied major development projects despite its contribution to national security.
He also criticized the federal government for high inflation, alleged corruption highlighted by the IMF, and rising electricity costs despite payments to IPPs.
Both leaders condemned the handling of the Gul Plaza fire in Karachi, holding the Sindh government responsible and promising vigorous protests in the province on Friday.
Sheikh Waqas Akram emphasized that PTI’s media cell will continue to hold weekly press briefings in all provinces to keep the public informed about political developments. PTI leaders reiterated that the February 8 protest would proceed peacefully and urged the federal government to release Imran Khan and hold free and fair elections.
