4 arrested for money laundering; Two suspects of MQM militant wing arrested with huge cache of arms
KARACHI: Rangers in a major sweep Friday raided three offices of an insurance company on I. I. Chundrigarh road, Metropol and Hockey Stadium, Karachi and arrested four persons. The company is reported to be owned by Anwar Majeed, a close friend of former President Asif Ali Zardari. Four persons were arrested during the operation over a financial scandal including corruption and money laundering.
According to reports, the Rangers took the record of the company into custody for further investigation but reportedly the offices were not sealed. Anwar Majeed is not in the country at the present. The business is run by his frontmen.
The operation was carried out just before the arrival of Mr Asif Ali Zardari in Karachi.
Anwar Majeed is considered as a strong man in Sindh and he looks after the sugar mills of the PPP chief. Differences were also developed between him and IG Sindh A.D.Khawaja who was forced to proceed on leave.
In another event, the Rangers raised the house of front man of Ovais Muzxaffar Tappi, foster brother of Asif Ali Zardari in Clifton area. One person was arrested.
Meanwhile the Rangers on Friday arrested two members belonging to Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s (MQM) militant wing in Karachi.
The Paramilitary Rangers on Friday carried out two major actions in Karachi where they raided an office of PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari’s close aide.
The Rangers personnel raided three offices of the same company located along I.I. Chundrigar Road, Hockey Stadium and Metropole.
According to sources, rangers first conducted raid on New Jubillee Insurance Company’s office located on I.I Chundrigar Road. The Rangers arrested four persons and seized documental record from the office.
In the second action, rangers raided the office of Omni Group owned by Anwar Majeed, a close aide of Asif Ali Zardari and an influential figure of the Sindh government, near Hockey Stadium.
Sources said the paramilitary troops arrested Admin Manager Omni Group Kashif a foreigner lady and seized important documents from the office. Sources said some other arrests had also been made during the raid.
The raiding team also seized several files and records from the offices. The raids were conducted just an hour before Zardari’s return to Karachi from Dubai after self-imposed exile of 18 months.
