Rehman Medical Institute (RMI) on Monday inaugurated its new Oncology and Palliative Care Services Ward aimed at strengthening cancer treatment facilities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Provincial Health Minister Khaleeq Ur Rehman formally inaugurated the facility during a ceremony attended by RMI Chief Executive Officer Shafique Ur Rehman, Chief Operating Officer Col (r) Tariq Khan and other senior officials.
Following the inauguration, the minister visited the newly established oncology ward and pharmacy, where Head of Oncology Department Dr Fawad Ul Qamar briefed him on treatment facilities, medicines and patient care services being offered at the institute.
Addressing the ceremony, the health minister congratulated the RMI management on the initiative and assured government support for improving cancer treatment facilities across the province. He said the provincial government was considering increasing the Sehat Card limit from Rs1 million to Rs1.5m, adding that consultations in this regard were underway with the chief minister.
Speaking on the occasion, RMI CEO Shafique Ur Rehman said around 185,000 new cancer cases were reported annually in Pakistan, with KP contributing nearly one-fifth of the national cancer burden.
He said cancer had become a growing public health challenge requiring collective efforts and termed the establishment of the new oncology ward an important step towards a comprehensive cancer care system.
Dr Fawad Ul Qamar said treatment plans at the institute were tailored according to the specific needs of each patient and added that the department had evolved into a multidisciplinary team including psychologists and psychiatrists to provide family-centred care.
A cancer survivor also shared her experience during the event and appreciated the treatment and support provided by the institute.
