The National Academy of Higher Education (NAHE), under the Higher Education Commission (HEC), organized a meaningful and symbolic activity titled “Plant-a-Promise” as part of the ongoing professional development training program for IPFP scholars at HEC Islamabad.
With passion and purpose, scholars actively participated in a tree plantation drive, each planting a sapling as a personal pledge to serve society. This initiative not only reflected their commitment to community service but also aligned with the global vision of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—particularly SDG 4: Quality Education – by nurturing socially responsible educators, SDG 13: Climate Action – through active participation in environmental sustainability, and SDG 15: Life on Land – by contributing to reforestation and biodiversity.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Sulaiman Ahmad, Director NAHE, emphasized the deeper symbolism of the initiative. He explained that just as trees provide shade, oxygen, fruit, and shelter during their lives—and even contribute materials like wood after—they serve as a metaphor for human contribution to society.
He encouraged scholars to tie their plantation with a personal promise: to remain beneficial to society, uphold their commitments, and mature their promises over time, much like the growth of a tree. Each participant pledged to emulate the selfless role of trees, committing to promote a green, healthy environment and a culture of service.
This symbolic yet powerful initiative served as a reminder that the responsibility of scholars extends beyond classrooms and research—it includes a commitment to environmental stewardship, community engagement, and nation-building, in harmony with the global SDG agenda.
