Special Assistant to the Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Information and Public Relations, Shafi Jan, has strongly condemned the use of a chemical-mixed water cannon against the sisters of PTI Founder Chairman Imran Khan and party workers outside Adiala Jail, terming it one of the worst examples of oppression.
In a statement issued here, Shafi Jan said that the use of chemical-mixed water cannon against unarmed women and peaceful political workers is deeply alarming, brutal, and utterly condemnable. He stated that the use of force against women and peaceful protesters is a shameful act and amounts to a blatant violation of constitutional rights.
Referring to the international reaction to the solitary confinement of PTI Founder Chairman Imran Khan, Shafi Jan said that the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Torture, Alice Jill Edwards, has urged the Federal Government to take immediate and effective steps to end the inhuman and degrading detention of Imran Khan. According to Alice Jill Edwards, the prevailing conditions may fall within the definition of torture or cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment.
Alice Jill Edwards, he said, has demanded that the conditions of Imran Khan’s detention be fully brought in line with international norms and standards. Imran Khan has reportedly been confined to a single cell for 23 hours a day, with extremely limited contact with the outside world. Alice Jill Edwards has stated that prolonged or indefinite solitary confinement is prohibited under international human rights law and has called for its immediate termination.
