PESHAWAR: Police Martyr Day is marked every year in the country on August 4, which is the death anniversary of Frontier Constabulary Inspector General Safwat Ghayyur.
He was martyred in a suicide attack near his office in Peshawar in 2010. The overall aim of the day is to pay rich tribute to the sacrifices of those who laid down their lives in the line of duty.
Keeping in mind the services of the fearless and veteran officer Safwat Ghayyur, August 4 has been named Martyrs’ Day across the country. Ghayur was the nephew of Sardar Abdul Rab Nishtar, the leading leader of the Pakistan Movement, and the cousin of former governor Owais Ghani and former armed chief Waheed Kakar, while the brother of former chief minister and former interior minister Aftab Sherpao, he belonged to the Pashtun tribe of Kakar.
Martyred Safat Ghayoor’s father, Abdul Ghayoor, was an ambassador to Thailand. He joined the Police Service of Pakistan as an Assistant Superintendent in 1981. He served as SSP Operations in Peshawar and later as Chief Capital City Police. However, his services were handed over to FC in December 2009.
Safat Ghayur was targeted in a suicide attack near the FC headquarters in Peshawar Cantt on August 4, 2010. The vehicle in which he was martyred has been preserved at the FC headquarters in Hayatabad.
After his death, he was awarded “Nishan Shujaat” and the nation every year celebrate August 4th as Police Martyrs’ Day to pay rich tribute to our fallen policemen and remember them for making unprecedented sacrifices to establish peace.
