Pakistan customs foiled a major smuggling attempt at the Pak-Afghan Torkham border and recovered 30 kilograms of silver worth approximately Rs48 million in open market, officials said on Saturday.
Custom collector Ghulam Mustafa told media that the seizure was made during a routine search at the import terminal when a truck arriving from Afghanistan was inspected. The silver had been cleverly concealed inside the tyres of the vehicle to evade detection. The truck was reportedly returning after transporting Afghan repatriators.
Ghulam Mustafa said legal action has been initiated against those involved. Further investigation was underway to trace the network behind the smuggling attempt.
It may be added here that all the borders points have been closed after Pakistan and Afghanistan exchanged gjn clashes at various border points on October 11 last year. However, trucks from and to have permission to cross Pakistan-Afghan border points carrying Afghan families returning to Afghanistan from Pakistan.
