Speaker Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly, Babar Saleem Swati on Monday emphasized that Parliament is the cornerstone of every democratic state.
It represents public aspirations, legislates for the collective good, ensures accountability, and upholds transparent governance.
On the occasion of International Day of Parliamentarism, he reiterated that the KP Assembly remains committed to expanding public access to the parliamentary process, particularly for the youth. Through regular student study visits, youth are invited to observe live assembly sessions, attend educational briefings, and engage directly with lawmakers. These initiatives are aimed at building constitutional awareness and strengthen democratic values in future generations.
The Speaker highlighted the Assembly’s ongoing efforts to ensure parliamentary transparency and public inclusion. He said key points, recommendations, and discussions from all Standing Committee proceedings are routinely shared with the public through press releases and video packages released under the title of each respective committee, using various official communication channels and media platforms.
He further added that proceedings of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), along with full assembly sessions, are broadcast live, enabling direct public oversight of the legislative and financial accountability process.
These measures are aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 16.7, which calls for responsive, inclusive, and participatory decision-making at all levels of governance.
In conclusion, Speaker Babar Saleem Swati reaffirmed the Assembly’s dedication to strengthening democratic institutions, promoting transparency, and ensuring civic engagement, so that Parliament stands not only as a law-making body, but a dynamic, people-centred institution responsive to the needs of the citizens.
