The district administration of Upper Swat on Friday held a special jirga with religious scholars to formulate, chaired by Deputy Commissioner Suhail Ahmad Khan at the Deputy Commissioner’s Office, was attended by District Police Officer Mushtaq Ahmad Khan, representatives of government and non-government organisations, local elders a joint strategy for maintaining peace, curbing drug abuse and promoting social reform in the district.
The meeting, chaired by Deputy Commissioner Suhail Ahmad Khan at the Deputy Commissioner’s Office, was attended by District Police Officer Mushtaq Ahmad Khan, representatives of government and non-government organisations, local elders and members of the clergy.
Participants reviewed the prevailing law and order situation, discussed the growing challenge of drug abuse and highlighted the important role of religious scholars in raising public awareness and promoting positive social values.
The meeting also condemned recent incidents in which women and ambulances were reportedly targeted, and urged religious scholars to use their Friday sermons and public engagements to promote peace, interfaith harmony, respect for the law and social responsibility.
Addressing the jirga, Deputy Commissioner Suhail Ahmad Khan and DPO Mushtaq Ahmad Khan said close coordination among the district administration, police, religious scholars and the public was essential for ensuring lasting peace and building a healthy society.
They reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to utilising all available resources to maintain law and order and eliminate social evils, including drug abuse, across the district.
