PESHAWAR: Transgender activists have raised concerns over alleged harassment and rights violations by police in Peshawar. Addressing a press conference at Peshawar Press Club (PPC), Arzoo Khan, leader of the Transgender Association, said that police checkpoints outside the Iqbal plaza have made it difficult for transgenders to earn a living through dance parties, their primary source of income. She accused some officers of extortion, physical and psychological abuse, and confiscating belongings, urging the Inspector General of Police to take notice and ensure justice for the transgender community. Transgender activist Subiya Khan (Bebo) highlighted that official desks meant for transgenders in Peshawar were staffed by non-transgender personnel, making it difficult for the community to access their rights. She also suggested recruiting educated transgenders in the police to address their concerns, ensure proper identification of offenders, and prevent harassment at checkpoints. Subiya emphasized that despite legal protections, transgenders continue to face displacement, blackmail, and exclusion from jobs and social services. DLP Report
