Tribes in Kurram agree to ceasefire after week-long deadly clashes

In a significant breakthrough, warring tribes in Kurram District have announced a ceasefire, paving the way for reconciliation. The conflict, sparked by disputes over trench construction in Upper Kurram, had escalated into violence across multiple areas, including Sadda, Sangina, Balishkhel, Khar Kaly.
In a symbolic gesture, police officers carrying white flags approached the trenches, marking a crucial step toward peace.
Commissioner Kohat Division Mutasim Ballah Shah, Commandant Kurram Militia force Taimur Sultan, Deputy Commissioner Javed Ullah Mehsud, DPO Ahmad Shah and local MPA Riyaz Shaheen together hoisted white flags, signaling the start of a peaceful resolution.
Reports from Upper Kurram indicate that random firing continues in two areas of Central Kurram and Upper Kurram. However, senior security and administrative officials have arrived on the scene to restore order.
In a display of exceptional courage, SHO Fazal Karim and his team from Sadda Police Station risked their lives to respond to the escalating violence. Fazal Karim and his team carrying white flags approached the trenches, marking a crucial step toward peace.
The administration and local elders have paid glowing tribute to the police team led by SHO Fazal Karim for showing bravery and playing a key role in maintaining peace and order.
Due to the violence, the Peshawar-Parachinar main road and the Pak-Afghan Khar-lachi border crossing were closed, leading to severe shortages of essential supplies such as food, fuel, and medicine.
The clashes among the different groups lasted for a week, resulting in the tragic loss of more than 46 and 98 individual sustaining injuries.
Kurram, a sensitive tribal region bordering Afghanistan, has reported several land disputes in the past that led to deadly sectarian clashes. Armed and in some cases, trained fighters were involved in the violence.
The provincial government recently formed a land commission to resolve land disputes between the two tribes, but it has yet to declare its decision.
