In a custodial death case in Peshawar, two police officials have been arrested after the court rejected their interim bail petitions on Monday.
The incident has once again sparked debate over accountability in cases of deaths occurring in police custody.
Additional District and Sessions Judge Tala Muhammad dismissed the interim bail applications of the accused police officials, Mutiullah and Saud Khan. Following the court’s decision, both officers were taken into custody directly from the courtroom.
According to the prosecution, the two officials were posted at the Safed Dher police post and had detained a citizen named Muhammad Ijaz, a resident of Regi, on suspicion of vehicle theft. The victim was reportedly already injured at the time of arrest, but his condition worsened during detention, leading to his death.
A formal inquiry into the custodial death was conducted by a Judicial Magistrate. Based on the inquiry report, the FIA registered a case against the two police officials.
After the registration of the case, the accused attempted to secure interim bail to avoid arrest. However, after hearing arguments, the court refused to grant bail, resulting in their immediate arrest.
Legal experts have described the court’s decision as an important step towards ensuring the rule of law and institutional accountability in sensitive cases involving custodial deaths.
