Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Central Information Secretary Sheikh Waqas Akram on Friday expressed grave concerns over the treatment of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, warning of nationwide protests if immediate corrective measures were not taken.
Addressing a press conference at the Peshawar Press Club (PPC), PTI leader Sheikh Waqas Akram said that 24 hours had almost passed without any clear strategy regarding the well-being of the party’s founder.
He alleged that both federal and Punjab provincial governments would be held responsible for any harm, claiming that PTI was facing discriminatory treatment. Sheikh Waqas Akram stated that the former Prime Minister Imran Khan had been administered eye drops for the past three months.
He also referred to a reported incident of food poisoning.
“Who has given this jail superintendent such sweeping powers?” he questioned, citing a previous statement by Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif in which he claimed that PTI would be responsible if any incident occurred. Sheikh Waqas Akram warned that the responsibility would now rest entirely with the PML-N if anything happens to the PTI founder.
He further criticised alleged violations of Articles 9 and 14 of the Constitution, questioning the authority of the jail authorities to deny basic rights, including food and medical care.
PTI leadership, including Achakzai Sahib, was quoted as saying that protests would continue until the demands regarding the former Prime Minister’s treatment were met.
Sheikh Waqas Akram added that if necessary measures were not taken, full scale protests, including a potential march in Islamabad, could be launched.
He claimed that preparations were underway in KP to support such demonstrations.
“If even a scratch is made on the founder of PTI, the nation will hold you accountable,” he warned, reiterating the party’s determination to press for proper care and legal protection of their leader.
