World Press Freedom Day observes in Landi Kotal amid calls for protection of journalists

Under the auspices of District press club, Landi Kotal International Press Freedom Day was commemorated on Sunday amid calls for protection of journalists and freedom of expression.
The Theme of World Press Freedom Day 2026 is “Reporting in the Brave New World:
The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Press Freedom and the Media.”
Besides Assistant Commissioner,Landi Kotal Inamullah Khan as a chief guest, former tehsil Chairman Haji Shah Khalid,Station House Officer,Landi Kotal police station Ishrat Shinwari,President Torkham Clearing Agents Association Mujib Shinwari,ANP provincial council member Fazal Rehman Afridi,Jamiat Ullema-e-Islam Fazal tehsil General Secretary Maulana Azeem Shah,Tehreek-e-Insaf local leader Abdurraziq Shinwari,President All Private Schools Association, Iqbal Afridi,Ex-Member provincial Assembly Wilsom Wazir,General Secretary Khyber Bar Sajjad Shinwari and others participated in the gathering held in District Press Club,Landi Kotal hall.
The speakers said that journalism had become a difficult profession due to government and other pressures in addition to economic problems of the media persons.
Highlighting the role, they said that the media reforms society and provides collective awareness to the people.
The journalists had rendered their services in Khyber in time of need and never hesitate to highlight problems of the laymen, they added.
While paying tribute to the journalists who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty they added that it was the responsibility of the state to provide a favorable environment to the media persons where they could execute their professional duties without fear and danger.
Earlier,President District Press Club,Landi Kotal welcomed the guests and thanked them for participating in the moot while senior journalist Farhad Shinwari appraised the guests of the problems of his community.
At the end a walk was also conducted at Bacha Khan Chawk,Landi Kotal Bazaar where the participants while carrying banner and placards inscribed with pro-press statements and chanted slogans in favor of the freedom of press
As per the Reporter without Border press freedom has fallen to its lowest level in 25 years history as more than half the world’s countries now fall into the difficult or very serious categories for press freedom.
It is to be stated here that in December,1993 ,May 03 was proclaimed World Press Freedom Day by the UN General Assembly.
