Approximately 27100 kg sugar has been seized so far by foiling smuggling attempts from Pakistan to Afghanistan in the on-going drive, launched by the administration at Michni checkpoint, Landi Kotal and Torkham.
Details provided by the Deputy Commissioner, Khyber on Friday stated that on the strict directive of the Chief Secretary, a joint team of departments of food and agriculture officials under the head of Assistant Commissioner, Landi Kotal Irshad Ali carried out anti-sugar smuggling activities at the check post.
During examination of Afghanistan bound loaded trucks, huge quantities of sugar and fertilizer, concealed in various cavities of vehicles, were recovered.
Imposing a ban on export of sugar, scores of smugglers became active and they buy the contraband goods from an open market in Peshawar and after transporting it to the Torkham, smuggle it across the border.
The administrative officials also carried out raids at godowns at the border to discourage smuggling of sugar.
It is to be stated here that to keep sugar and fertilizer stocks and prices stable, strict action against smuggling and hoarding was approved by the federal government.
