Govt prioritizes scientific planning to tackle flood risks: Irrigation minister

Provincial minister for irrigation Riaz Khan has said that the government was taking pragmatic steps to implement planning on modern scientific lines in flood-prone and vulnerable areas, aiming to prevent future losses and strengthen disaster resilience.
He expressed these views while chairing an important meeting regarding protective embankments, flood management, and development projects along the Gabral River in Kalam and the Shahgram/Madyan stream, a handout said.
The meeting was attended by Member National Assembly Dr. Amjad Ali Khan, Member Provincial Assembly Mian Sharafat Ali Khan, Secretary Irrigation Abdul Basit and concerned officers.
During the meeting a detailed briefing was given on projects being implemented under the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Flood Resilience Project (KP-FRP).
The briefing highlighted that the project includes various flood protection measures such as protective walls, bunds, embankments, retaining walls, bio-engineering structures, water diversion and storage schemes, telemetry and flood warning systems, as well as the rehabilitation of important streams and rivers.
These measures aim to reduce potential flood risks, ensure timely drainage and safeguard the lives and property of the public.
On the occasion MNA Dr. Amjad Ali Khan and MPA Mian Sharafat Ali Khan apprised the Provincial Minister of the issues faced by their respective constituencies and highlighted the need for flood protection walls, embankments and other development projects. Addressing the meeting Minister for Irrigation Riaz Khan ordered that concrete and sustainable measures be taken to protect the lives and property of the people and to ensure sustainable development.
The Provincial Minister directed the concerned authorities to complete the proposed projects in a transparent manner and within the stipulated timelines, while also incorporating the recommendations of elected representatives into the planning process.
He added that the provincial government would utilize all available resources to achieve public safety and development goals. Riaz Khan further stated that the Irrigation Department is taking all possible and necessary steps for public welfare and regional development and that public-interest projects are being completed on a priority basis.
He added that special attention is also being given to transparency, improvement and reforms in line with modern requirements within the Irrigation Department, the positive impacts of which will directly benefit the public.
