PESHAWAR
In line with the directives of Chief Secretary Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Syed Shahab Ali Shah, a high-level meeting was convened under the chairmanship of Commissioner Peshawar Division, Riaz Khan Mehsud to improve traffic flow, reduce road accidents and modernize the traffic management system across the division. The meeting held on Tuesday was attended by Chief Traffic Police Officer Peshawar Zahidullah, Deputy Commissioners of all five districts of Peshawar Division, Secretary Regional Transport Authority Peshawar Abrar Ahmad Wazir, Director General Capital Metropolitan Government Peshawar Qadir Naseer and relevant officials.
Several key decisions were made to address the growing traffic challenges in Peshawar and other districts of the division.
It was decided that all Deputy Commissioners would prepare comprehensive traffic management plans within one week. These plans will prioritize the identification of congested areas, accident prevention measures and enhanced safety in school zones.
The meeting also emphasized the use of modern technology to ensure strict enforcement of traffic laws. A proposal to introduce a camera-based enforcement system was discussed to enable transparent and automated monitoring.
The Chief Traffic Officer informed participants that key locations and school zones have already been identified while a case for the release of funds has been submitted to the relevant authorities.
The Deputy Commissioner Charsadda briefed the meeting on steps taken to eliminate encroachments, stating that committees have been established at the tehsil level. Efforts are also underway to install traffic signals and address staff shortages in coordination with the Home Department.
A proposal was also presented to allocate funds for traffic-related projects under the “Peshawar Uplift Program Phase II” to ensure timely completion of public welfare initiatives.
The Commissioner directed all the authorities concerned to clearly define responsibilities for traffic projects and expedite the process of fund allocation. He reaffirmed the commitment that all stakeholders will fulfill their responsibilities within the stipulated timeframe to provide citizens with safer and more efficient travel facilities.
