On the direction of the federal cabinet, duty free import of tomato and onion is in progress from Afghanistan through the western border and so far 9417 tons of the vegetable items have been imported.
It is to be mentioned here that keeping in view price hikes of the tomato and onion in the country, the federal cabinet has decided to eliminate duty on import of the commodities from Afghanistan.
Collector custom appraisement Amjadur Rehman while sharing details said that duty free import of the vegetable (tomato and onion) has been continued at Torkham, Khar Lachi,Ghulam Khan and Angoor Ada and on priority base the import item has been cleared to make timely supply of the commodity to the markets.
Approximately 7211 tons of tomato and onion have been imported from Afghanistan via the above-mentioned four crossings in the last four days, the official said.
The custom officer said that with the import of vegetable items, supply and demand will be balanced and prices of it will be stable in the grocery markets.
