The Food Department and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Food Safety and Halal Food Authority have launched a joint crackdown in Peshawar, inspecting five flour mills receiving wheat from government warehouses to ensure the supply of safe and quality flour to consumers.
The official wheat quota of one flour mill was cancelled for violating prescribed standards and standard operating procedures (SOPs), while flour samples collected from various mills were sent to a laboratory for testing.
The operation was conducted on the directives of Special Assistant to the Chief Minister for Food Dr Mohammad Israr Khan, Secretary Food Shah Mahmood, Director General KP Food Safety and Halal Food Authority Kashif Jilani and Director Food Mohsin Iqbal.
A Food Department team, accompanied by officials of the Food Safety and Halal Food Authority, inspected the mills under the supervision of the Deputy Director Food Peshawar and the Rationing Controller.
During the inspections, officials checked the quality of wheat and flour, cleanliness and hygiene arrangements, production processes and relevant records maintained by the mills. Samples of flour were collected from different mills and sent to the authority’s laboratory for analysis and quality testing.
Officials said the government wheat quota of one mill was cancelled after its performance was found to be in violation of prescribed standards and regulations.
The performance of other mills and the quality of their flour would continue to be monitored.
Inspection teams directed the management of the mills to strictly comply with standards relating to flour quality, cleanliness and hygiene.
Officials warned that negligence in ensuring the supply of quality flour or violation of prescribed standards would not be tolerated and legal action would be taken against violators.
The Food Department and the KP Food Safety and Halal Food Authority said joint inspections and monitoring of flour mills would be further intensified. Further action would be taken in accordance with laboratory findings once the test reports were received.
