The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued an alert over the risk of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOF) in the upper districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, warning of possible flash floods due to expected rainfall and rising temperatures.
According to a statement issued by the PDMA spokesperson, a new wave of westerly winds is likely to enter the upper parts of the province from May 3, bringing rain and thunderstorms.
Heavy rainfall is expected in the districts of Chitral, Dir, Swat and Kohistan, increasing the risk of flash floods, particularly due to the potential bursting of glacial lakes triggered by sudden temperature rise and precipitation.
The PDMA has directed district administrations to ensure advance preparedness and take emergency measures in vulnerable areas.
Authorities have been instructed to enhance surveillance in sensitive locations and keep early warning systems fully operational. Rescue personnel and relevant departments have also been directed to ensure the availability of machinery and equipment. The statement warned that flooding and high flows in rivers and canals could pose risks to vehicles, advising the public to avoid unnecessary travel and postpone visits to high-risk areas.
Residents have been urged to move livestock and valuables to safer locations and strictly follow advisories issued by relevant authorities.
All concerned institutions, relief teams and district administrations have been directed to remain on alert and maintain coordination for a prompt response to any emergency.
The PDMA said its Emergency Operations Centre was fully functional and advised the public to contact helpline 1700 for information or to report any untoward incident.
