Secretary for Climate Change, Environment, Forestry and Wildlife Junaid Khan on Saturday visited Peshawar Zoo to review its facilities and reaffirm the government’s commitment to animal welfare and biodiversity conservation.
He was accompanied by Chief Conservator Wildlife Dr Mohsin Farooque during the visit, which focused on assessing the zoo’s operations and ongoing initiatives, said a handout.
The delegation toured key sections of the zoo, including the veterinary hospital, natural history museum, auditorium and fish aquarium.
Officials were briefed by administrative and veterinary staff on measures aimed at improving animal care, strengthening conservation practices and enhancing the visitor experience.
The secretary and the chief conservator also took part in a tree plantation activity within the zoo premises, highlighting the importance of environmental protection and green spaces amid growing climate challenges.
During a meeting with the zoo director, discussions were held on the institution’s future plans, including infrastructure development, educational outreach and the adoption of modern practices in wildlife management.
Mr Khan appreciated the zoo administration’s efforts in maintaining standards of animal welfare and environmental responsibility. He said the zoo played an important role not only as a recreational facility but also as a centre for education, conservation and public engagement.
Officials reiterated the need to further strengthen such institutions to promote awareness about wildlife protection and ensure sustainable management of biodiversity.
