The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Food Safety and Halal Food Authority on Friday seized around 3,000 kilograms of substandard and rotten meat from a passenger bus during an inspection on the GT Road in Peshawar.
According to a Food Authority spokesperson, the Peshawar food safety team had established a checkpoint near Kala Mandi to inspect vehicles transporting food items.
During the operation, officials found a large quantity of rotten and substandard meat concealed in compartments of a passenger bus.
The meat was declared unfit for human consumption and subsequently destroyed at the Water and Sanitation Services Peshawar (WSSP) dumping area.
Officials said the transportation of the meat in concealed compartments was a violation of food safety and hygiene standards.
Legal proceedings have been initiated against the people involved in the transportation and supply of the unsafe meat under the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Food Safety Act, the spokesperson said.
Special Assistant to the Chief Minister for Food Dr Muhammad Israr Khan appreciated the food safety team for the operation and said no leniency would be shown towards those involved in supplying substandard or hazardous food to the public.
He directed the relevant officials to intensify action against unsafe food and strengthen monitoring of the transportation and sale of food items across the province.
Dr Israr said provision of safe, hygienic and quality food was among the government’s priorities and that monitoring and enforcement activities would be further strengthened.
He warned that strict legal action would be taken against those endangering public health, saying there would be no compromise on food safety.
