A Green Energy Walk held at the University of Peshawar (UoP) on Wednesday brought together students, academics, civil society members and community leaders to advocate for clean, affordable and sustainable energy solutions in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The walk was organised by the Centre for Regional Policy and Dialogue in collaboration with members of the Green Energy Jirga, civil society partners, and the Department of Criminology.
Participants highlighted the country’s growing energy challenges and stressed the urgent need to transition towards renewable energy sources, particularly solar power and battery energy storage systems (BESS).
They called for the removal of taxes on solar equipment, restoration of net metering, and increased investment in rooftop solar and energy storage solutions.
Speakers also emphasised the importance of community-driven initiatives such as micro-grids and locally owned renewable energy systems, terming them viable pathways towards energy security and sustainability.
The event aimed to mobilise public awareness, strengthen policy dialogue, and promote practical solutions for a balanced energy future.
Participants further urged the government to declare a “National Battery and Energy Storage Emergency,” remove taxes on solar technologies, restore a fair net-metering framework, and accelerate deployment of energy storage systems to meet rising energy demands.
